Present membership includes MPs, State and Federal public servants, lawyers, engineers, local government officers, academics, librarians, town planners, environmental consultants, architects, and people from many other disciplines.

Membership Benefits


NELA offers its members a range of exclusive membership benefits including

  • discounted rates at NELA events and the events of the NELA’s partners and friends such as the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand, Legalwise Seminars, and the Resource Management Law Association of New Zealand; 

  • access to the NELA Bulletin which is the only national environmental law news service providing information on law and policy updates at the international, federal, state and territory levels; upcoming events; opportunities such as jobs, study and scholarships, awards; calls for submissions on proposed changes to law and policy; and new resources such as books and websites.

Membership Types


NELA has three categories of membership: individual, corporate and student.

Individual membership is open to anyone interested in environmental law and who agrees to the purposes of the company.

Corporate membership is open to any organization that agrees to the purposes of the association, joining on behalf of five nominated individual members.

Student membership is an individual membership that is offered at a discount for full time students who provide a copy of their student card with their application form or renewal.

NELA offers Life membership to people who have made an outstanding contribution to the organisation and the practice of environmental law. Our Life members are: Dr Gerry Bates, Mr John Haydon and Judge Christine Trenorden
