2020 Environmental Law Essay Competition

The NELA Essay Competition seeks submissions of high quality, cutting-edge scholarship on Australian environmental law and/or climate law.

Competition Details


The NELA Essay Competition is open to any student enrolled at an Australian tertiary institution, including undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Evidence of enrolment as a student must be submitted along with the essay. Submission based on essays that have been submitted for assessment in a unit on Australian environmental law or climate law are eligible (and encouraged).


The winners of the best entry by an undergraduate student and the best entry by a postgraduate student will receive AU$500, registration for a national NELA event, and a one-year NELA membership. The judging panel may decline to award prizes in its discretion.

Submission Date

Essays must be submitted through NELA’s website by 5pm on 11 December 2020.

Publication of Essays

Winning essays will be considered for publication in the Environmental and Planning Law Journal, Australian Environmental Review or in NELA's publications.


Essays should be 4000 to 7000 words. Longer essays will not be accepted. Footnotes are excluded from the word count. AGLC format is prefered.


Entries will be reviewed by a panel of experts and the winning essay will be announced by February 2021.
