NELA’s 2024 Inaugural Biennial Lecture

Human Rights and Rights for Nature in the Net Zero and Nature Positive Transition

NELA is thrilled to invite you to our inaugural biennial lecture, ‘Human Rights and Rights for Nature in the Net Zero and Nature Positive Transition’, our flagship event for 2024.

This event features three mini-lectures from leading legal minds to explore the implications of establishing new legal rights, including human rights and rights for nature, intended to lead to better management and regulation of the human-nature relationship. These rights are particularly important in responding to and mitigating the challenges raised the climate and biodiversity crises and will play a key role in the net zero and nature positive transition.

Recently cases of litigation and shareholder activism have demonstrated the need for governments and businesses to recognise and respond to climate and nature-related risks. Courts in Australia and internationally demonstrating willingness to recognise the importance of environmental rights and some countries have enshrined rights for nature within their constitution. With a potential federal human rights act on the horizon in Australia and growing appetite for the recognition of rights for nature (particular water systems), lawyers and advocates should be across the key legal developments. The recognition and enforcement of these rights will shape future climate and nature litigation and have implications for government, corporate and community behaviours.

The lectures will be followed by food and drinks at the venue.

The lectures will also be live streamed for those that cannot join us in person.

Please email events@nela.org.au for all enquiries.
