The National Environmental Law Association was established in 1982 with the goal of advancing Australian environmental law and promoting education on environmental law issues.

NELA brings people together to discuss environmental policy and law through workshops, conferences, and other events, promotes education through the provision of bursaries and an annual essay competition, and advances environmental law by contributing to the discussion on proposals for law reform.

NELA membership is open to anyone with an interest in environment and resources law and related disciplines.

NELA's Strategic Direction

We are a national body created to advance Australian environmental law and policy.

We provide national leadership and a strong, balanced voice on environmental law and policy matters, and bring together people with an interest in environmental law and policy to consider and progress these matters. We facilitate advancements in environmental law and policy, including through lodging submissions on law reform, providing education through events, publications and funding.  We seek to achieve positive environmental outcomes through improving environmental laws and promoting an interest in environmental law and policy in the community.

NELA's work is managed and carried out by a board of directors and portfolio officers, all of whom are volunteers.
