The ASEAN Environmental Rights Framework and Opportunities for Australia

NELA is delighted to be collaborating with the Asian Research Institute of Environmental Law and LAWASIA on a panel talk on the ASEAN Framework for Environmental Rights and lessons for Australia. The event will be hosted online and at the College of Law, Sydney. For those in Sydney, the talk will be followed by networking drinks.

This seminar will provide an overview and background of the work on an ASEAN Environmental Rights Framework and review the current discussion on environmental rights in Australia.

It will also:

● Consider how Australia could undertake an Aarhus Convention review to see what changes are required for Australia to be compliant with existing norms on environmental and procedural rights.

● See if there is sufficient support for a project to examine environmental and procedural rights in Australia and prepare a submission to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights before 1 July 2023.

5:20 – 5:40 Overview of the proposed ASEAN Framework on Environmental Rights Matthew Baird, Director, Asian Research Institute for Environmental Law

5:45 – 6:00 A Healthy Environment is a Human Right. Melanie Montalban, ACT,  Managing Lawyer, EDO, will speak on the EDO report on environmental rights.

6:00 – 6:25 Moderated discussion and consideration of further action steps to advance environmental rights in Australia.

6:25-6:30 Updates and closing
